There are many different forms of mining used to extract minerals and other valuable materials from underground. As a result, there is a wide variety of specialized equipment involved in the process.
Longwall Machine
The longwall machine is a huge underground mining implement that can produce huge loads of coal with relatively little effort. It works by extracting large panels of coal cut with huge shearers directly from the wall of the mine. The machine then drops the coal onto a conveyor belt, which ferries it out of the mine.
Continuous Miner
The continuous miner is an essential part of the mining industry that accounts for approximately 45 percent of underground coal production. It operates by rotating a large steel drum fitted on the outside with tungsten carbide teeth to scrape coal from the mine wall. This piece of machinery can move up to five tons of coal in one minute.
Draglines
The dragline is a type of surface mining equipment that ranks among the world’s largest machines. It is used in open pit mining to move huge loads of surface soil in order to expose the minerals underneath. The largest draglines can lift several hundred tons of earth in a single load. The largest buckets are the size of a two-car garage.
